Customers shocked by electric bills that more than doubled

CALVERT CITY, Ky. — The new year is coming. The first of the month is usually when bills are due. Many of you have been shocked when you took a look at your electric bill.

Some electric customers say their bill doesn’t reflect their energy usage. Gregory Anton moved to Calvert City a year and a half ago.

“Our bills were running 200 some odd dollars – not even 250. In December, it jumped to 533,” he said. “We thought it was a lot of stuff we were using, so we cut back. In January of 2018, our bill went up to 944 dollars.”

His wife took on a second job just to keep the lights on. So Anton says they made some changes to their energy usage. “It’s just me at home during the day. There are no lights on. The only that runs is our fridge, things like that.”

He has Jackson Purchase Energy Corporation. JPEC recommends you keep your thermostat at 68 degrees. Anton keeps his just one degree higher at 69, but he says he doesn’t usually hears his heat turn on. His bill still more than doubled this December from 173 to 538 dollars.

I asked JPEC CEO Greg Grissom for an interview. He said he would do an interview, then later declined an interview over email. He did send some answers via email. He wrote as it gets colder, it takes more energy to keep your home at a certain temperature.

Anton says no matter what he does, his bill still doubled. “We have used less and less and less preparing for what happened last year, but yet it’s happening anyway.”

He wanted to know if this was only happening to him. Turns out he’s not alone. He posted on Facebook and dozens of people are saying they have the same issue.

“It upsets me, it’s not just people like me. There are other people less fortunate that this is happening to,” Anton said. He says he expects his bill to go up when it gets colder, but a nearly 400 dollar increase is something he doesn’t understand.

Anton and other customers on Facebook are concerned that the smart meters have something to do with the increase. Anton is still waiting on some answers from JPEC before he pays his bill.
