Energy giants blame smart meters for soaring bills

Fuel costs are rising yet again, but suppliers claim that the increases are justified

Recent price rises from five of the Big Six energy companies will cost UK consumers an extra £1.2 billion

If you are an EDF Energy customer still reeling from the price rises last month, it has been another frustrating week. The company’s decision to increase its dual fuel standard tariff, adding £78 to the annual bills of 1.5 million households, has led to calls for price caps on the energy sector.

EDF blamed its second price rise this year on wholesale costs and the government’s £11 billion smart meter programme, which has been plagued with delays and technical setbacks.
