KENTUCKY-LG&E rate hike to cover updates, smart meters

LG&E rate hike to cover updates, smart meters

LG&E seeks to boost its electricity service revenue 8.5 percent; natural gas service revenue 4.2 percent

Customers of LG&E and Kentucky Utilities would finally get advanced electric meters – sometimes called smart meters – at their homes and businesses under a proposal on Tuesday that includes a substantial rate increase.

It’s part of LG&E and KU Energy’s plan to invest $1.4 billion in their electric and natural gas systems that company officials said will “improve safety, reduce outage times and enhance service.”

But there will be a cost to customers.

Typical LG&E residential customers would see their monthly electricity bills increase by $9.65 and gas bills by $2.99, according to the company. And across the state, LG&E’s sister company Kentucky Utilities wants to raise its typical residential electricity bill by $7.16 a month.

That translates into an 8.5-percent revenue increase for LG&E electricity service, and a 4.2-percent increase for LG&E gas service, the company said. The KU revenue increase is proposed at 6.4 percent.

The utilities want to install intelligent control equipment on the distribution system that serves homes and neighborhoods, and similar equipment on the high-voltage transmission systems that connect to the national grid, a news release said.
