BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) – Officials in Bay City may be asked to consider whether residents who don’t have a smart meter installed inside their home to track water usage should lose service.

The Bay City Commission on Monday got a look at a proposed ordinance amendment that would see residents who haven’t had a new smart meter installed pay a monthly $9 meter reading fee.

The Bay City Times reports (http://bit.ly/1R8O0J1 ) a related proposal says residents who don’t have a smart meter installed by April 1, 2017, would have 10 days to do so, or city workers could shut off service. Hundreds of customers don’t yet have the meters.

A vote on the fee is expected at the commission’s Jan. 19 meeting. The newspaper says the shut-off proposal could be taken up later.
