Smithville council to decide smart meter opt-out program

In recent weeks, some residents have come out against the move to smart meters, citing specific concerns based on claims the technology carries health, privacy and security risks. City officials, however, maintain the program is safe and will save money and time.

City Council members voted to look into the possibility of an opt-out program at a meeting Nov. 9 after many residents expressed concerns about the smart meter project at a resident-led public forum. The caveat, however, was the program had to be “economically feasible.”
